Citizen Watch Repair: Eco-Drive, Battery & Service

Citizen Watch Repair: Eco-Drive, Battery & Service

Posted by Evan Saltzman on 16th Sep 2026

Citizen watches are famous for reliability — especially the light-powered Eco-Drive — but even a Citizen eventually needs service, a new crystal, or an Eco-Drive cell replacement. Here's what Citizen repair involves across its different movements, and how our certified watchmakers keep your Citizen running, backed by our status as an authorized Citizen dealer.

Citizen's movements, and how they're cared for

Citizen makes several kinds of watches, and each needs slightly different care. Eco-Drive models are light-powered — they charge from light into a rechargeable cell and take no routine battery. Standard quartz Citizens run on a replaceable battery. And Citizen also makes automatic (self-winding) watches that are powered by wrist motion and need periodic service. Knowing which type you have determines what your watch needs, and if you're not sure, we'll identify it for you. As an authorized Citizen dealer with an in-house service center, we handle all of them. See all our services on the watch repair page.

Eco-Drive service and cell replacement

Eco-Drive watches are wonderfully low-maintenance — they charge from light and need no routine battery changes. But the rechargeable cell that stores that energy isn't immortal. After many years (often a decade or more), it can gradually hold less charge, at which point it needs a proper replacement by a watchmaker — not a standard battery swap. If your Eco-Drive no longer holds a charge the way it used to, running down quickly even with regular light exposure, the rechargeable cell is the likely culprit. We can replace it and reseal the watch so it holds a full charge again. It's an infrequent but important service to have done correctly.

Standard quartz battery replacement

For a standard quartz Citizen, the most common service is a battery replacement — and on a water-resistant model, doing it correctly protects the watch. We open the case with the proper tools, install a fresh battery of the right type, inspect and replace the gasket as needed, reseal the case, and confirm the watch is running before it leaves the bench. For water-resistant models we can also pressure-test the seal. Most battery changes are done while you wait. Learn more on our watch battery replacement page.

Signs your Citizen needs service

  • A standard quartz model has stopped or the second hand ticks in jumps — usually a dead battery.
  • An Eco-Drive won't hold a charge the way it used to — the rechargeable cell may need replacing.
  • It's losing or gaining time, or an automatic won't hold its power reserve.
  • Fog or moisture under the crystal — a failed seal needing prompt attention.
  • A scratched crystal or worn band spoiling the look or fit.

What a Citizen service includes

Beyond a battery or cell, a fuller service addresses the whole watch. Depending on what your Citizen needs, that can include cleaning and lubricating an automatic movement, regulating it for accuracy, replacing worn parts and gaskets, resealing and pressure-testing the case, replacing a scratched crystal, servicing the bracelet, and replacing an Eco-Drive cell. For Citizen's popular Promaster divers, restoring water resistance is often the priority. We evaluate the watch, explain what it needs, and provide an estimate before any work begins.

Promaster divers and water resistance

Citizen's Promaster line includes capable dive watches, and for those water resistance is essential — but it depends on seals that age over time. Whenever we change a battery, replace a crystal, service the movement, or replace an Eco-Drive cell, we reseal the case and can pressure-test it so your Citizen is protected again. If you swim or dive with your watch, have the water resistance checked periodically, keep the crown screwed down, and rinse off salt water after use. Maintained seals keep a Promaster ready for the water.

Cost and turnaround

Cost depends on the model and the work — a battery and reseal is very different from an Eco-Drive cell replacement or a full automatic overhaul — so we provide a clear estimate up front. Battery changes are often done while you wait; larger repairs take longer, and we'll give you a realistic timeline with your estimate. Every movement repair is backed by our 12-month guarantee. Whether it's an everyday Eco-Drive or a prized Promaster, you'll always know the cost before we begin.

Caring for your Citizen

A little care keeps a Citizen dependable. Give Eco-Drive models regular light so they stay charged, and avoid storing them long-term in the dark. Keep a screw-down crown fully closed, and rinse off salt water after swimming. Change a dead battery on a standard quartz model promptly, since a battery left dead can leak. Have water resistance checked periodically, and store the watch away from strong magnets, heat, and hard knocks. Citizens are famously reliable, and this basic care keeps them running well for many years.

Citizen Repair at Saltzman's

Watches built to last — and worth maintaining

Part of why Citizens inspire such loyalty is that they're built to last and easy to live with. Eco-Drive in particular removes the recurring hassle of battery changes, and many owners keep a Citizen for a decade or more. A modest investment in a battery, an Eco-Drive cell, or a service keeps a well-loved Citizen running long after a disposable watch would have been discarded — and because so many Citizens are given as gifts and graduation watches, they often carry sentimental value too. Whether it's an everyday Eco-Drive, a rugged Promaster, or an inherited automatic, our watchmakers keep it going with honest estimates and guaranteed work. Citizens reward the small amount of care they ask for, which is exactly why so many people never stop wearing them.

Vintage and inherited Citizen watches

Citizen has a long history, and people often bring us older or inherited models — including vintage automatics and early quartz pieces. These deserve gentle care: assume an older watch is not water resistant unless we confirm otherwise, keep it away from moisture, and don't force a stiff crown. Our watchmakers can evaluate an older Citizen, source the parts it needs, and revive a watch that's been sitting for years. If you've inherited a Citizen and aren't sure what it needs, bring it in and we'll assess it honestly, with an estimate before any work. A watch that's been in a drawer for years can often be brought back to reliable running order — ready to wear and enjoy again.

Frequently asked questions

Does an Eco-Drive watch need a battery?

Not a disposable one. Eco-Drive charges from light into a rechargeable cell, so there are no routine battery changes — only a rare professional cell replacement after many years.

My Eco-Drive won't hold a charge — what's wrong?

After years of use, the rechargeable cell can lose capacity and need replacing. We can replace it and reseal the watch so it holds a full charge again.

Can you service a Citizen I bought elsewhere?

Yes. As an authorized Citizen dealer we service and repair Citizen watches regardless of where they were purchased, in-house at our Rhode Island service center.

Can you restore a Citizen Promaster's water resistance?

Yes. We inspect and replace gaskets and can pressure-test the case, so your Promaster is properly sealed again.
