Seiko Watch Repair: Battery, Kinetic, Solar & Service

Seiko Watch Repair: Battery, Kinetic, Solar & Service

Posted by Evan Saltzman on 16th Sep 2026

Seiko makes some of the most reliable and beloved watches in the world — but even a Seiko eventually needs a battery, a service, or a repair. From everyday quartz models to automatics, Kinetic, and Solar, here's what Seiko repair involves, how the different movements are cared for, and how our certified watchmakers keep your Seiko running.

Watchmaker servicing a watch at Saltzman's Watches in Rhode Island

Seiko battery, service, and repair handled in-house by certified watchmakers.

Seiko's many movement types

Part of what makes Seiko special is its range of movement technologies, and each is cared for a little differently. Quartz Seikos run on a replaceable battery. Automatic (self-winding) models are powered by wrist motion and need periodic service rather than a battery. Kinetic watches convert wrist motion into stored electrical energy in a capacitor, and Solar models charge from light — both use a rechargeable cell rather than a standard battery. Knowing which type you have determines what your watch needs, and if you're not sure, we'll identify it for you. See all our services on the watch repair page.

Seiko battery replacement

For a quartz Seiko, the most common service is a battery replacement — and on a water-resistant model, especially a diver, it's precision work. A cracked gasket or a poorly sealed case lets in moisture, and the wrong tools scratch the caseback. We open the case correctly, install a fresh battery of the right type, inspect and replace the gasket as needed, reseal the case, and confirm the watch is running before it leaves the bench. For water-resistant models we can also pressure-test the seal. Most battery changes are done while you wait. Learn more on our watch battery replacement page.

Kinetic and Solar Seikos

Kinetic and Solar Seikos don't take an ordinary battery — they store energy in a rechargeable cell (a capacitor or rechargeable battery). Over many years, that cell can lose its ability to hold a charge, at which point it needs a proper replacement by a watchmaker rather than a standard battery swap. If your Kinetic or Solar Seiko no longer holds a charge the way it used to — running down quickly even with regular wear or light — the rechargeable cell is the likely culprit, and we can replace it and reseal the watch. It's an infrequent service, but an important one to have done correctly.

Signs your Seiko needs service

  • It has stopped — a dead battery on a quartz model, or a service need on an automatic.
  • The second hand ticks in jumps — a common low-battery signal on quartz watches.
  • It's losing or gaining time or, on an automatic, not holding its power reserve.
  • A Kinetic or Solar model won't hold a charge the way it used to.
  • Fog under the crystal — a failed seal needing prompt attention.

What a Seiko service includes

Beyond a battery, a fuller service addresses the whole watch. Depending on what your Seiko needs, that can include cleaning and lubricating an automatic movement, regulating it for accuracy, replacing worn parts and gaskets, resealing and pressure-testing the case, replacing a scratched crystal, servicing the bracelet, and replacing a Kinetic or Solar cell. For Seiko's popular divers, restoring water resistance is often the priority. We evaluate the watch, explain what it needs, and provide an estimate before any work begins.

Cost and turnaround

Cost depends on the model and the work — a battery and reseal is very different from a full automatic overhaul or a Kinetic cell replacement — so we provide a clear estimate up front. Battery changes are often done while you wait; larger repairs take longer, and we'll give you a realistic timeline with your estimate. Every movement repair is backed by our 12-month guarantee. Whether it's an inexpensive everyday Seiko or a prized diver, you'll always know the cost before we begin.

Caring for your Seiko

A little care keeps a Seiko dependable for years. Keep a screw-down crown fully closed, and rinse off salt water after swimming. Give Solar models regular light and wear Kinetic and automatic models often to keep them charged and running. Change a dead battery promptly, since a battery left dead can leak, and always have it changed somewhere that reseals and tests the watch. Have water resistance checked periodically, and store the watch away from strong magnets, heat, and hard knocks. Seikos are famously tough, but basic care makes them last even longer.

Seiko Repair at Saltzman's

Seiko divers and water resistance

Seiko is famous for its dive watches, and for those models water resistance isn't a luxury — it's the whole point. But water resistance depends on seals that age, so a Seiko diver needs its gaskets maintained and its seal tested to stay dive-ready. Whenever we change a battery, replace a crystal, or service a Seiko diver, we reseal the case and can pressure-test it so it's protected again. If you actually dive or swim with your Seiko, have the water resistance checked periodically, keep the crown screwed down, and rinse off salt water after use. Maintained properly, a Seiko diver will serve you reliably for years in and out of the water.

Watches worth keeping for decades

Part of why Seikos inspire such loyalty is that they're built to last — and worth maintaining. Owners often keep a Seiko for decades, and many are handed down. A modest investment in a battery, a service, or a Kinetic cell replacement keeps a well-loved Seiko running long after a disposable watch would have been thrown away. Whether it's an everyday quartz, a treasured diver, or an inherited automatic, our watchmakers will keep it going with honest estimates and guaranteed work. Seikos reward the small amount of care they ask for, which is exactly why so many people never stop wearing them.

Serving Seiko owners across Rhode Island

With locations in Cranston and Newport, plus mail-in service, expert Seiko care is easy to reach. Whether you need a quick battery, a diver resealed, a Kinetic cell replaced, or a full automatic overhaul, our certified watchmakers handle it in-house. Customers come to us from across Providence, Warwick, Newport, and beyond, as well as neighboring Massachusetts and Connecticut, for honest, expert service on watches they intend to keep for years. Wherever you are, you'll get a clear estimate before any work and our 12-month guarantee behind it — the same care Saltzman's has offered Rhode Island since 1940.

From everyday Seikos to Grand Seiko

Seiko spans an enormous range, from affordable, rugged everyday watches to the exquisite craftsmanship of Grand Seiko, and our watchmakers service across that spectrum. A well-loved everyday quartz deserves the same careful, correct battery-and-reseal as any watch, while a fine automatic or a diver calls for a thorough overhaul and water-resistance testing. Whatever your Seiko, we handle it in-house with the right tools, genuine parts wherever available, and honest estimates before any work. No watch is too modest or too fine for proper care — and keeping any Seiko running well is exactly the kind of work we've done in Rhode Island since 1940.

Frequently asked questions

Does my Seiko take a battery?

Quartz Seikos use a replaceable battery. Automatic models don't (they're wrist-powered), and Kinetic and Solar models use a rechargeable cell rather than a standard battery.

My Kinetic Seiko won't hold a charge — what's wrong?

The rechargeable cell likely needs replacing after years of use. We can replace it and reseal the watch so it holds a charge again.

Can you service a Seiko diver's water resistance?

Yes. We inspect and replace gaskets and can pressure-test the case, so your Seiko diver is properly sealed again.

Can you repair a Seiko I bought elsewhere?

Yes. We service and repair Seiko watches regardless of where they were purchased, in-house at our Rhode Island service center.
